Using Start from Scratch in Unfold

Use Start from Scratch templates to create high-quality content with Unfold.

You can use Start from Scratch templates to create high-quality content in a variety of formats and aspect ratios, starting with a blank canvas.

Supported Formats

Start from Scratch templates support the following formats:

  • Story (1080x1920)
  • Reel (1080x1920)
  • Post (1080x1350)
  • TikTok (1080x1920)
  • 1x1 Square (1920x1920)
  • 4x5 Portrait (1536 × 1920)
  • 16x9 Landscape (1920x1080)
  • YouTube Shorts (1080x1920)
  • YouTube videos (1920x1080)
  • Facebook posts (1200x630)
  • Facebook Ads (1920x1920)
  • Snapchat (1920x1080)
  • Twitter (1080x1350)
  • Pinterest (1000x1500)
Some formats are only available if you are subscribed to Unfold Plus or Unfold Pro. All free Start from Scratch templates will export with an Unfold watermark unless you are subscribed to Unfold Plus or Unfold Pro. To learn more about either plan, visit Unfold Plus or Pro.

Use a Start from Scratch template

  1. In the Unfold app, select a Start from Scratch template from the Home screen by tapping + and selecting a template.
  2. Tap the canvas and add a photo or video.
  3. Edit your photos or videos using the editor.
  4. Tap Media to add more photos or video clips to the frame.
  5. Tap + to add a page and repeat the process to add more photos or clips to the project.
  6. Tap the eye icon to preview your project. 
  7. Drag and drop an image or video clip to change the order.
  8. Tap an image or video clip, then tap to edit, replace, or delete it.
  9. Tap the export icon, and select This post or All posts, then select how you want to export your project.

Create an Instagram Reel with Start from Scratch

With Start From Scratch Reels, you can select up to 50 photos and videos from your camera roll, along with a music track, to create an engaging reel with photos or video cut automatically to the beat of the music. You also can create or edit images before or after adding them to your video.

At this time, Unfold Video is available for iOS only.

To create a Reel with Start from Scratch:

  1. In the Unfold app, tap + and select Reel.
  2. Tap From scratch.
  3. Select up to 50 images or videos from your device.
  4. In the top-right corner, tap Select to confirm your selections.
  5. Optional: select music by Epidemic Sound.
  6. Tap Skip or Add to Reel.
  7. In the top-right corner, tap the export icon to download your Reel to your device, or post directly to your social media.

To add transitions between your video clips and images:

  1. After you've selected the media to include in your Reel, tap the transition icon between the video clips or images.
  2. Tap different transitions to preview how they will look. Some of the transitions have directional options. If so, an arrow icon will appear at the bottom of the preview. Tap the arrow icon to select the transition direction.
  3. Optional: in the bottom-right, tap … and then Apply to all if you want the same transition between every clip in the Reel.
  4. In the bottom-left corner, tap the down arrow to return to return to editing.

Use Beat Sync for your Start from Scratch Reel

Beat Sync changes the timing and transitions between the media in your Reel to cut automatically to the beat of the music.

To add music with Beat Sync to your Start from Scratch Reel:

  1. After you've selected the media to include in your Reel, tap Add a track.
  2. At the top of the screen, tap a mood.
  3. Tap a song to preview it.
  4. To add a song to your Reel, tap the song and then tap +
  5. Beat sync is automatically applied to your Reel.

Delete or replace the music track

  1. In the bottom-right corner, tap the name of the track.
  2. Tap next to Beat Sync On.
  3. Tap Replace or Delete.

Change the speed of the transitions

  1. In the bottom-right corner, tap the name of the track.
  2. Tap the stopwatch icon to cycle through the three speed options.
  3. When you find a speed you like, either swipe down or tap the preview pane to return to the project screen.

Change the starting point of the music track

  1. In the bottom-right corner, tap the name of the track.
  2. Tap and drag the waveform to choose where in the track the music should start.
  3. When you are happy with the starting point, either swipe down or tap the preview pane to return to the project screen.

Create a carousel post

Carousel posts display multiple slides of media that seamlessly scroll together.

  1. In the Unfold app, tap + on the home screen and select Carousel.
  2. Tap Media to add a photo or video to the canvas.
  3. Tap an image to edit, resize, crop, rotate, or move it backward or forward to layer with other media.
  4. Tap - to delete the last slide or + to add a new slide.
  5. Tap the eye icon to preview your project.
  6. In the top-right corner, tap the export icon to save the images to your device.
Unfold+ and free plans can create Carousels with a maximum of two slides. Unfold Pro plans can create Carousels with maximum 10 slides.
